This is a special release from Diageo, released 2012 and bottled at cask strength. I love the standard 15 year old Dalwhinnie so I’m very curious about this one.
No. of bottles :5358
Distilled: 1987, bottled: 2012
On the nose: Thick and spicy honey. Caramelized nuts, mead, blood oranges and som kind of lotion/shampooy note(not unpleasant at all, but it’s there). Canned peaches coming through after a while. It’s all very thick and syrupy. With water, a malty barleysugar note appears. Very sweet, but not overly so. Just very, very pleasant.
Palate: Big! Heavier than the 15 year old. Seems like ‘the gentle spirit’ has stepped it up a notch, I guess. There’s spicy lemon. It even feels like it’s slightly carbonated, reminds me of Fanta orange. Delicious stuff indeed. Water brings out hints of mango icecream or even mango sorbet. Finish has good length with heavy spiced honey and some woody toffee notes.
Fabulous whisky. This is a grown up version of the lighter 15 year old. I wish they added this to Dalwhinnies core range, alongside with the 15yo and distillers edition ‘cus I love it, absolutely love it.
