Now onto a sample that was given to me by Håvard from Whiskymoro. This is the first batch of Springbank 18 year old, released in 2009. Research tells me that about 80% of the whisky in this is drawn from ex-sherry casks. Very promising..
On the nose: Toffee, dark chocolate, hazelnuts, almonds, dark stewed fruits and cherries. All this mixed together with lovely sweet oak notes. If you add water, the bourbon becomes more prominent and it gets greener in a way.
On the palate: Sherry and spices. Has a rich and thick mouthfeel. Loads of caramel, very delicious. Water makes it fruitier with hints of vanilla and nutmeg. The finish has sweet honey notes. Quite spicy and quite long.
Great stuff, all in all. Especially the nose. That being said, one should avoid adding water to this as it loses some of it’s ‘punch’ and character in my opinion. 46abv is just perfect for this one.
